Jobs of the future in Sydney

According to a Sydney Morning Herald article at the end of last year, based on a report by the Committee for Sydney think tank, there are 5 industries of growth between now and 2050. These are finance, biotech, digital tech, advanced manufacturing and clean energy.

The report emphasizes the need for strategic planning and investment in these sectors to maximize Sydney’s economic potential. Currently, these industries employ 21% of the city’s workforce, but increasing this share to 31% could significantly boost high-value job opportunities1.

The report also warns about the risks of economic over-reliance on coal, which made up 36% of the state’s exports in 2022-23. With global efforts to decarbonize, this dependency poses a significant economic risk1. The Committee calls for targeted policies to support the priority sectors and ensure Sydney remains competitive on the global stage.
