How to Apply for Australia’s National Innovation Visa

Jan 10 2024

Now this seem timely to touch on again, given all the debates in the US at the moment about HB1 visas and whether they attract talent or replace locals with lower paid immigrants. It’s not my place to comment on the US, but it is interesting to compare with way Australia has tried to attract talent.

The rebranded Australian Global Talent Visa (Subclass 858) is now called the National Innovation Visa (NIV). The type of talent it looks for has not changed:

  • global researchers
  • entrepreneurs
  • innovative investors
  • athletes and creatives who can make significant contributions that will benefit Australia’s future prosperity.

The NIV is a permanent visa designed for established and emerging leaders across various fields, including global researchers, entrepreneurs, innovative investors, professional athletes, and talented individuals in the arts. These individuals will contribute significantly to Australia’s future prosperity through their high-calibre talent and skills.

How to Apply

  • Submit an expression of interest (EOI) that highlights your achievements and potential contributions to Australia.

Nomination

  • The Department must invite you before you can apply for this visa.

On this visa you can:

  • stay in Australia permanently
  • work and study in Australia
  • enroll in Australia’s public health care scheme, Medicare.
  • sponsor your relatives to come to Australia
  • travel to and from Australia for 5 years
  • if eligible, apply for Australian Citizenship

This new visa program underscores Australia’s commitment to fostering innovation and attracting world-class talent, ensuring a prosperous future for the nation.
