New Skills in Demand Visa: Key Changes Explained

On 6 December, the Australian Government announced the new “Skills in Demand Visa” (SID), replacing the Temporary Skills Shortage (TSS) Visa. Here are the key updates:

The SID visa (subclass 482) includes three streams:

  1. Specialist Skills Stream: For applicants in any ANZSCO occupation (excluding trades, machinery operators, drivers, and labourers) with an income threshold of $AUD135,000 or more.
  2. Core Skills Stream: For roles listed on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) with an income threshold of $AUD73,150.
  3. Labour Agreement Stream: Maintains settings from the TSS visa and will be further developed.

Key changes include reduced work experience requirements, annual indexation of income thresholds, and updated visa application charges. The SID visa also offers a pathway to permanent residency through the Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186) visa.

These changes aim to address Australia’s evolving labor needs and provide a clearer pathway to permanent residency for skilled workers.
