In the last day of parliament for 2025, the Australian government aimed to race through 30 bills on the last sitting day of the year with mixed results. One significant bill, which proposed capping the number of international students allowed to enter Australia each year, was not passed due to time constraints and the opposition party backing away from early support.
Basically, there was not time to debate the bill, so it has been put on hold.
This decision has temporarily alleviated concerns for institutions that would have been affected by the cap. The bill’s failure to pass means that, for now, there will be no changes to international student enrolments.
